February Update

We wanted to send you a quick note to update you on Mars Community Change and the upcoming school board election.

In case you missed it, we put out a press release a few weeks ago announcing our endorsed candidates for Mars school director. That led to a number of mentions in local news outlets, including the Butler Eagle and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Many folks are aware of one of our five candidates, Megan Lenz, from her write-in campaign back in 2017. We want to be sure you get to know the four other great candidates running with Megan this year. You can read all about them here.

While there are many issues facing our district, we recently put together a graphic highlighting the most important principles of our campaign:

Now through March 12, we are collecting signatures to get on the May primary ballot. We're having our first petition signing party in Kauffman Run (behind Adams Ridge) TONIGHT from 6:00PM - 8:00PM. More information is available here.

We will be having more petition signings in the next few weeks; be sure to like and follow our Facebook page for the latest updates.

We also launched a candidate match donation effort this week. To show their dedication, for every dollar donated to the campaign in the next four weeks, the candidates will match those contributions dollar for dollar. Donations are used for things like yard signs and t-shirts for volunteers. Every little bit helps; you can contribute here.
As we continue to engage members of the community, we want to make it clear that we see great potential in the Mars Area School District. And we believe Mars is a good school district for two primary reasons:
  1. Teachers/staff/administrators who care deeply about our kids — they’re committed and creative.
  2. Parents and community members who are committed to being an integral part of our kids’ education. They understand that strong schools make a strong community and they know that it takes an entire community to help kids reach their full potential.
But we also think it's necessary to point out the things that are keeping us from being a GREAT school district. As board members, these are the things we're committed to changing if we are given the chance:
  • Lack of foresight and planning
  • Lack of resources
  • Lack of transparency resulting in a lack of trust
A lack of foresight and planning has led to deep financial debt that puts programs at risk. A lack of resources has led to failing grades from the state on special education audits of the Mars Area School District in 2012 and 2017. A lack of transparency, including questionable no-bid contracts and financial conflicts of interest, erodes public trust in district leadership.

But we can fix these things that are holding us back.

That's why we're running. We are asking for you vote because we want to unleash the untapped potential here in Mars. It's time for new blood, fresh thinking, and a renewed commitment to the centerpiece of our community, which is our schools.

Much more to come...
- Megan, Jill, John, Bill and Jill
